NOTESThe Drive were formed in 1971 after Bunny Luthuli approached Henry Sithole and his brother Stanley about entering a band competition. Luthuli had performed with the two brothers in Almon's Jazz 8 and the Heshoo Beshoo Group (Eshoo Beshoes) in the late 1960s. View the Heshoo Beshoo's classic album Armitage Road in this archive. Sadly both Luthuli and Henry Sithole died in a car accident in Tzaneen on May 5th, 1977, about two years after this recording was made. What is possibly The Drive's debut LP Slow Drive to Soweto is also featured in this archive. Drive Unlimited could be one of the first albums to feature self-taught pianist, Bheki Mseleku who arrived in Johannesburg from Durban in 1975. Mseleku would also form the group Spirit's Rejoice with bassist Sipho Gumede later that same year. Read Mseleku's obituary in The Independant, he died in 2008. |
