MOSSEL BAY SCRAPBOOK
by C.W. Courtney
unpublished scrapbook of paper ephemera from 1912 to 1944
134 pages
A fascinating collection of articles, letters, and photographs of cultural life in Mossel Bay from the 1910s and 1920s. This unique, unpublished document was compiled by C. W. Courtney, the proprietor of the local newsagent and book store in Mossel Bay who also managed many of the bookings of touring theatrical and musical performers. The book includes letters written to Courtney by various artists thanking him for his support. Articles include coverage of a visit by the Cape Town Municipal Orchestra conducted by Theo Wendt in 1914. Curiously, Courtney kept detailed records of all the door-takings for each performance, though oddly they are all written in code.

K****R MUSIC *
by NORA SCULLY and WILLIAM CHARLES SCULLY
in THE PALL MALL MAGAZINE
Vol. XII, May to August 1897
edited by LORD FREDERIC HAMILTON
printed by Hazwell, Watson and Viney, London
8 pages, pp. 179–186
* Note the colonial term employed in the title here was commonly used in 19th Century texts to describe people of colour in Southern Africa. Today it is considered exceptionaly offensive and racist. While the text is acutely patronising, it is one of the earliest in the archive to feature a description of music from South Africa. A PDF of the text can be accessed below.

SONGS OF THE KRAALS OF SOUTHERN RHODESIA
by HUGH TRACEY
first published 1933 or 1934
this reprint 1934
by The Rhodesian Printing and Publishing Co. Ltd., Salisbury
64 pages
A very early publication by Hugh Tracey, uniquely in Shona and English. The introductory text by Tracey is dated July 1933, though a colophon note in the rear of the book states that it is "reprinted" in 1934. It is not clear if this implies that this is the second edition of the book or if it is simply reprinted from Tracey's notes.

HUGH TRACEY / GEORGE WITTENBORN CORRESPONDENCE
by HUGH TRACEY and GEORGE WITTENBORN
vairety of paper ephemera from 1953 to 1954
published mostly by African Music Research (AMR), Johannesburg
21 items
A fascinating collection of paper ephemera documenting correspondences between Hugh Tracey and George Wittenborn—the seminal, New York based publisher and book dealer. Items include letters, an AMTL catalogue, card samples from the AMR library, flyers, pamplets and other promotional material relating to what would eventually become the ILAM archive. The collection gives an interesting window on how Tracey marketed the AMR and AMS internationally in the early 1950s. Tracey does himself a historical disservice in one letter where he speaks disparagingly about black American jazz.
