NOTES

Two Zulu vocal jive tracks by John Ngcobo and his Dazzlers featuring a female and male accompanying voices, with Enoch Thabethe on electric guitar. The B-side Thina Sobabili, composed by Thabethe is particularly engaging.

Guitarist, Enoch Sipho Thabethe began his music career in Durban, recording for the SABC in 1950. He performed with many groups during the 1950s and 1960s, including Miriam Makeba and the Skylarks, The Sunbeams, Billy the Kid, the D.R.C. Choir and Tomas Ndaba’s Swing Stars (Yvonee Huskisson has this group name as Mdaba’s Swing Stars). Thabethe also formed his own group, the Ragtime Melodians of Lamontville with others including Robinson Bhengu. In 1958 Thabethe moved up to Johannesburg to work professionally as a session musician for Gramophone Record Company (GRC) and as a free-lance accompanist. (Huskisson)
