NOTES

OK, let me start off by saying that this album has to be one of my all time favorites. Featuring two amazing 15 minute tracks that quite frankly could be remixed to play forever.

The root of this music is the extended bump jive of The Movers (which itself has its roots in Abdullah Ibrahim's classic Mannenburg). Bump jive, here however, with a serious inflection of disco!

Hamilton Nzimande, the producer of this record and for whom the band is named also discovered and first recorded The Movers, according to Rob Allingham.

The Nzimande All Stars were the sometime backing band for Izintombi Zesi Manje Manje featured in Louis Meintjes' excellent book The Sound of Africa!

Side by Side was included in my first mix of South African music made available on Matsuli, in December 2008. In August 2010, Highway Sporo Disco, a late 70s track by the group was reissued on the Sofrito label (SOFRITO 001).
