NOTESProbably one of the most iconic and influential jazz albums to come out of South Africa. The album was recorded at the UCA Studios in Cape Town in June of 1974 and featured two long-form tracks, one on each side. The title track, Mannenburg, is a mispelling of the name of the township in the Cape Flats outside Cape Town. Manenburg was established in 1966 as part of the apartheid government's Group Areas Act plan to segregate people by race; forcibly moving people-of-colour out of so-called "white areas". In this case people from the "Coloured" community were moved from areas such as District Six. Curiously, the album's title also gave tenor saxophonist, Basil "Mannenburg" Coetzee, his famous nick-name. Other issues of this album are titled Cape Town Fringe. |
